THE STORY OF EMILIOS ELIADES
A young man, at the age of twenty-one, already married and with a baby on the way, embarked on a journey to make his entrepreneurial dreams come true.
First steps to making a dream come true
In 1957, with the support of his wife, Emilios Eliades sold his car and, with that very little money, launched his own business.
He rented a little shop in Nicosia and began selling light fixtures, quickly adding other products, such as irons, and delivering his clients’ purchases himself on his bicycle.
Realising the market potential, he began to include more electrical appliances, purchasing them from local vendors and selling them at a small margin.
Grabbing opportunities
Always seeking new opportunities, in 1960 Emilios attended the Milan fair in Italy. There he met the founder of Smeg, Vittorio Bertazoni, and convinced him to widen Smeg’s horizons by exporting to other countries, starting with Cyprus. And so the journey began…
Employing the slogan ’Choris Lefta’ (‘With No Money Down’) and successfully selling 4,000 Smeg cookers, he quickly became established as the man who provided quality products at affordable prices.
On to the next generation
Now, the vision, values and aspirations of Emilios Eliades’ live on through today’s generation whose members continue to provide excellence in price, product and customer service.
