Types of Air Conditioners
- Inverter / Split Unit
The most commonly used air conditioner in Cyprus as it allows for cooling different rooms at different temperatures. Each compact unit is equipped with its own thermostat and unlike other systems comprises of two parts. The condenser unit installed outdoors, and the compact blower unit mounted indoors.
- Portable Air Conditioner
These have all their components packaged in one appliance. They are most commonly used in situations where the design of a room or building rules and regulations prevent the installation of air conditioning units.
- Central Air Conditioners
Commonly used in offices and industrial environments as it is the most effective solution for large communal spaces. One central control panel regulates the entire network of ducts in the building or separate floor.
Performance
The amount of energy output of an Air Conditioning system is measured in British Thermal Units (BTU). In order to figure out how many BTUs your new air conditioning should have, you need to figure the square footage of your space.
Typically, smaller rooms such as bedrooms require 9000BTUs, while larger areas such as living rooms require 12000BTUs. Open plan areas should use 14000+ BTUs depending on square footage size.
Refrigerant
Air Conditioning refrigeration and freezing technology require a refrigerant. This is important as it helps blow cool air throughout your home. There are several types of refrigerant, as they have evolved through time to be more efficient and environmentally friendly. The most common refrigerants found in the Cypriot market are:
- R410A
Viewed as a safer alternative to R22 as it has an Ozone Depletion Rate (ODP) of 0! Global Warming Potential (GWP), though improved, still remains high at 2,090.
- R32
Refrigerant adopted by most manufacturers recently as it is the most energy efficient and environmentally friendly refrigerant currently available. Has an ODP of 0 and a much lower GWP of 675!
Energy Class
Electrical devices are classified in 7 energy classes, from A to G. This depends on the energy they consume and the energy they output. The higher the class the more energy efficient your Air Conditioner will be.
